Wallis Aviation is
Expanding!!!!!
In an effort to keep the planet in it's original
beauty without pollution and all those nuclear plants from having
accidents, we at Wallis Aviation have decided to branch out into
Renewable energy.
1. Q- I dont think I can operate any of my stuff on your solar
gear... I've got all 110 volt stuff...
A- Great news, with a solar panel, a
charge controller, a few small batteries, a sine wave inverter
and a sense of adventure you can live of solar energy for weeks at a
time in your camper or small tent.
2. Q-I run a Search and Rescue unit, how can you help me?
A- It's so simple. Instead of you having to
lug a generator and a constant supply of gas and oil and of course
listen to that racket for 24 hrs a day.... just keep the generator
for back-up, and purchase a slightly larger system than I described
above and you are only limited by the amount of time you can stay in
the woods without a shower. With a small windmill like the whisper
and a solar panel array, you can operate day and night without
concern.... just do the math on how many kw hours you will need
during the day and purchase accordingly.
3. Q-Whats all the rumors of not being able to run a lap-top on
an inverter?
A- All computers or other sensitive computer
equipment require pure sine wave inverters. Dont try running your
laptop or your home system on anything else... and if it does not
specify pure sine wave...It probably is a square wave inverter. They
are relatively cheap(pure sine wave inverters) and are worth
the investment.
4. Q-I'm not familiar with electricty at all.. what do I do?
A- Easy!!!! Call me and we will discuss your
needs. If I am unable to answer any of your questions I have quite a
few people on hand that answer those questions for a living and are
very good. You will probably want to hire a contractor that is
familiar with these items to install anything that is intertied with
the grid or subject to wiring codes.
5. Q- Ok you've almost got me convinced.... will the equipment
pay for itself?
A- Ohhhh dear... quite a difficult
question to answer for everyone... The energy production depends on
where you live and also the avg wind speed, your budget, and amount
of solar energy you recieve in a day. Lets not forget tax breaks
too!!!! Not only will you save several tons of emmisions from the
powerplants.... you wont be as vulnerable to power outages either.
6. What can I do in the mean time to save energy and be
environmentally conscious?
A- First lets start with your energy consumption..... Change all
the lightbulbs in the house to Flourescent low energy bulbs. Second
simply dont leave the lights on when not needed. Third, put all the
items in your house on switches so that you can turn off all
electricity when the items are not in use.. example, the tv and all
the other gadgets use a "phantom load" to keep operating while you
are not using them.... you know, to rember which channel you were
on. The washing machine and dryer also consume a phantom load..
basically put everthing on a switch except for your freezer and
refrigerator. You dont have to go way out on a limb but if you want
too.... solar powered clothes dryers work very nicely... errrrr well
unless it's raining. Two poles.... some wire and some wooden clips
will save you more energy than you think. There are a few more
things that you can do too, like insulating your house and sealing
window seals completely not to mention just going ahead and buying
the insulated windows. You can set your heat and cooling systems a
little bit closer to the temperatures of the day instead of having
the units run all day. Insulation is the best investment you can
make. If you really want to do all you can..... the exterior of you
house is really where you can make up some lost ground. If your
house is in cold climate like mine... paint it dark to absorb
heat.... if your are in a heat zone... paint it a light color to
reflect the energy. To reduce your energy consumption do a worksheet
and subscribe to homepower magazine at www.homepower.com . I guarentee
it will blow your mind at how much we as a modern society waste
energy. From our SUV's to our other big toys.... I bought a VW GOLF
TDI (turbo diesel injected.... what a kick butt little
car!!!1 51 mpg on the hwy and of course 42 in the city..... It
will tow a 1000 lb load with authority too!!! So forget the huge
pickup... just call me and I will direct you where to buy them!
What's really scary is how much the avg american spends on fuel and
upkeep.... I pay 1.79 for Diesel in NY state and gas is 2.07 or
thereabouts.... at 51 mpg thats 3.5 cents a mile compared to a
pickup that gobbles 15 miles a gallon at 2.07 a gallon ( 14 cents a
mile in fuel). Times those numbers per mileage and the answer is
astounding..
hmmmmm, my car for 100,000 miles is 3,500.00 for gas
the pickup for 100,000 miles is 14,000.00 in gas
So in 5 yrs of driving I save 10,500.00 in gas... not to mention
that my VW is known to run for more that 500,000 miles if you take
good care of it... A jeep... hahahahaha.... I kill me... try
170,000 max... so then you have to fork out another 26 grand to be a
suv owner.... I'm taking that 36 grand I just saved myself and
putting towards the mortgage on the house which should save me quite
a bit of money by paying it off early. WAKE UP AMERICA... get out
and exercise... meet you rneighbors.... network relations and
conserve energy the right way!
Lets not even mention using vegetable oil at 43 cents a gallon...
or the metric tons of pollution you saved from mother earth.
All you Oshkosh people... camping for a week... no tv... no hot
shower... no evening lights... I feel your pain.... I've spent many
a night in the woods being very quiet during Army exercises...
Your answer to creature comforts is here!!!! With a modified
sine-wave inverter, a flexable solar cell, and a
rechargeable battery or two you can have your 110 volt items humming
away nicely. The new LED and low energy lights provide enormous
amounts of light at extremly low power demands. The pure
sine-wave inverters are espically made for special appliances like
computers and other devices that need a true sine-wave to operate
instead of the traditional square wave inverters. Just do some
simple calculations on your energy demands and purchase equipment
accordingly. BUT WHY STOP THERE?!!!
TIRED OF THAT HUGE ELECTRIC BILL!?
Many states are offering huge tax benefits for people using
renewable energy. www.homepower.com has many
many ideas on how to build and install solar and wind power devices
to power your entire home as well as how to save energy everyday. I
drive a diesel golf that I plan to power with vegetable oil(51mpg
hwy,42 city) and I've changed all the lights in my house to
high efficency bulbs to save energy... my bill has gone down 40%!!!
Not only do I save money but I'm having a great time learning how to
be semi-self reliant. I have a generator for backup power for when
the power goes out(and it does). I'm building a solar hot water
heater..... $95 worth of items from Home Depot and I've made a
collector to heat my water with the sun. That will save me at least
10.00 a month in electricity. Next is my entertainment system. One
sine-wave inverter, several used car batteries from the junkyard
next door(free), One 25 watt solar cell and some misc items and I'll
have free movies... stay tuned!!!!
Wake up America... stop being reliant on the grid... dont be the
polar bear... be self reliant and dont pay for electricity or
fuel!!! Vegetable oil is a viable alternative to Diesel.

An on-line catalog is soon to arrive. Items will be presented on
our on-line store and If you do not like using your credit card on

TECH TIP
Wind powered battery charging systems can be
cost-effective if the average wind speed is nine miles perhour
(mph) or more at the location of the wind generator. If you
are using wind in combination with photovoltaic power, it may
be cost effective if good wind is available only during part
of the year. The power available from the wind is proportional
to the cube of the wind speed. When the wind speed doubles,
the power delivered is eight times as great . Most wind
generators are designed to deliver maximum power at a wind
speed of 30 mph. At 15 mph, they will deliver about 1/8 their
rated power. A wind generator should be mounted at least 20
feet higher than any obstruction within 300 feet to avoid
turbulence. You can expect the power output of a wind
generator to decrease roughly 3% for every 1000 feet of
elevation. That means that you'll get 70% of the power at
10,000 feet elevation.
DO YOU HAVE A GOOD SITE FOR
WIND?
Towers
We do not recommend mounting wind generatorson
roofs. Though it is possible with a wind generator of 500
watts or less output, it will be noisy. Larger wind generators
could cause severe damage to the building. Freestanding
towers, guyed towers or guyed poles may be used with wind
generators. Wind generators can be mounted on freestanding
towers designed for antennas. They require a large, engineered
concrete base for support, but since the do not require guy
wires, they can be installed in the smallest space. Guyed
steel truss towers, also designed for antenna mounting, are
less costly and require a large area for guy wire placement. A
tilt-up pole tower is the most economical and the easiest to
install. Wiring and mounting of the wind generator are done
before the tower is erected. No climbing is necessary. Steel
tubing can be bought locally to save
freight.
Wiring
It is important to avoid excessive loss of power
from voltage drop in wire from the wind generator to the
batteries. It is not necessary to use a wire size that
minimizes voltage drop for maximum generator output. It will
be more economical to choose a wire size that gives a 2%
voltage drop at the average generator output for your site.
The Air403 has two wire DC output. Use the wire loss chart on
page 61 to decide on wire size. The Whisper wind generators
have 3-phase AC output that is rectified to DC at the control
box. Wire size can be smaller on these machines. Use a wire
designed to carry the rated current of the generator you are
using, but remember, three conductors are required. If wire
size required is too costly, compare the price of a Whisper
HVT machine, which has a 240 VAC output that is stepped down
to battery charging voltage. This results in significantly
smaller wire size, which will usually more than offset the
extra cost of this machine. Call for
details.

Wind Effect
0-1 Smoke rises vertically 2-3 Direction of wind
shown by smoke drift but not by wind vanes.
4-7 Wind felt on face; leaves rustle; ordinary
wind vane moved by wind
8-12 Leaves and twigs in constant motion; wind

19-24 Small trees in leaf begin to sway; crested
wavelets form on inland waters
25-31 Large branches in motion; whistling heard
in power lines; umbrella use is difficult.
Measuring Wind Speed
You can use one of the measuring devices
to determine wind speed. The NRG wind totalizer acts like an
odometer in a car, giving you the total wind passage over
time. Average wind speed is calculated by the user by dividing
the miles of wind passage by the number of hours the machine
has been running. This unit can be installed and checked
weekly or monthly. If you are patient, you can measure for a
year or two and get a good idea of your potential power
availability. Both the Dwyer and Kestrel wind speed indicators
work like a speedometer, displaying current wind speed, but
neither records any information for future reference. The
Dwyer and NRG can be mounted on a tower to give you an idea of
wind speed where the generator will be located. If you measure
wind speed at ground level, you can expect about 1.5 times the
wind speed 30 feet up, which equates to about three times the
power. At 120 feet above the ground, wind speed will be twice
what is measured at ground level and power output will be more
than twice the output at 30 feet. If you do not have a wind
gauge, you can get a rough idea of wind speed from the
table.

AeroMax Lakota 900 Watt
Wind Turbines

The Lakota turbine uses an 8 pole, 36 slot, 3
phase alternator with 10 winding leads. This allows 4 separate
field adjustable settings to be made that will optimize its
output and match it's performance to low, medium, high or
severe wind regimes. Power Output at sea level is 900 watt
nominal at 28.8 mph and 500 watts nominal at 21.5 mph. Blade
swept area is 36.9 ft2 (3.43 m2) and start-up wind speed is 6
mph (2.7 m/s). The Lakota generator has a high power to weight
ratio. It uses a single stator, rare-earth neodymium iron
boron permanent magnet in a cast aluminum casing with
stainless steel fittings. The upward furling mechanism ensures
the Lakota will not "hide" from high winds, but continue to
put out up to two times its rated power without damage to its
electrical or mechanical components. Its precision components
are designed for long life. We recommend at least a 60-100 amp
DC circuit breaker be used with all installations. Lakota
turbines are sealed units and require only annual inspection.
No lubrication or overhaul maintenance schedule is required
during the life of the generator. (approx. 15-20 years).
Marine or desert installations may need more attention to
surface corrosion and leading-edge tape on the blades.
Helicopter grade leading-edge tape is replaceable if abraded
by fine debris or sand. Lakota field units have survived
120mph storms while other units nearby have self-distructed.
Vehicle mounted test units continue to output maximum power at
over 70mph with no damaging effects. Lakota's aerospace grade
unidirectional carbon fiber blades are not to be confused with
carbon matrix or carbon reinforced plastic blades. Unlike
plastic with powdered carbon blades that bend and flutter, the
carbon fibers in the Lakota blades are 7 times stiffer than
common steel, and carry the loads from tip to root. This
allows the Lakota to harness far more energy annually than
comparable similar wind turbine generators. In addition, the
increased output substantially lowers the overall cost of
energy despite a slightly higher initial purchase price. The
Lakota SC has a special UV stabilized titanium dioxide, linear
polyurethane aircraft coating that protect the unit from rain,
snow, ice, sun, sand and dust, wind and
corrosion.
